Flashback Friday: Stingray City

Stingray City

Stingray City in Grand Cayman was absolutely incredible. Tom and I had the opportunity to stop here during a snorkeling excursion while cruising in January 2013. As the boat approached the sandbar I was able to see the stingrays in the beautiful, clear Caribbean water and I was immediately terrified. I must have looked ridiculous when I first got into the water. As curious as I was about the stingrays, and as excited as I was to snorkel, I didn’t know what to do. Fortunately, I am an animal lover and I was quickly able to overcome my fears. From that moment on, I enjoyed every second and every aspect of my experience.

If you ever find yourself in Grand Cayman, make time for Stingray City. I was really worried that it would be a forgettable, over-promoted tourist trap but it was one of the highlights of my 2012-2013 winter trip and to this day, I still find myself thinking of it.

DIY Air Freshener

Image1

I still remember the first time I tried this DIY air freshener. I was in my first year of university and living in residence. What university student doesn’t love a quick and easy, budget friendly DIY project for their dorm room? This simple DIY air freshener works especially well in small spaces (dorm rooms, bathrooms, closets, entry ways, etc…).

You will need:

  • a small glass jar
  • 1/4 cup of baking soda
  • 8-10 drops of your favorite essential oil

Combine the 1/4 cup of baking soda and 8-10 drops of essential oil in the small glass jar, stirring well as you combine to avoid clumping and to evenly distribute the oil.

Replace approximately every thirty days. This is a great opportunity to experiment with a new fragrance!

Let me know if you have any suggestions for great smelling essential oils or fragrance oils.

Wedding Wednesday: I Told Tom He Can Plan Our Honeymoon!

Maybe I am still caught up in the excitement of getting engaged but I have given Tom full control when it comes to planning our honeymoon. That being said, I have specified that I do not want to be kept in the dark. During Tom’s planning process he will have to reveal details such as the location (and not a broad description, I want to know exactly where I am staying), the dates, what we will be doing, etc…

I’m not too worried. First of all, we haven’t even set a wedding date yet, there is always a chance Tom will forget about our little deal by the time we start planning the honeymoon. But perhaps more importantly, Tom just pulled off what I consider an absolutely incredible proposal. I’m kind of excited to see what he comes up with for the honeymoon.

What’s your dream honeymoon?

Where’s the Blog Post?

It may have been my intention to have a new blog post up today and start working on a second for the week, but unfortunately, things do not always go as planned. I started feeling a little under the weather on Sunday and by yesterday afternoon I had two sore ears, a sore throat and a fever. While I was hoping to be feeling back to normal this morning, I’m still feeling quite sick. I do expect there to be a delay before I get the chance to blog again as I have a lengthy to-do list to tackle once I am feeling better (let’s hope that’s tomorrow morning).

Perhaps these Instagram pictures will make up for my lack of blogging?

September 7th, 2013 – All Over the Place

Good morning everyone, and happy Saturday!

When I woke up this morning I knew that I wanted to blog but I couldn’t for the life of me decide what to blog about. Instead of flipping through my long list of blog post ideas, I’ve decided to just write.

About a month ago, Tom and I purchased a Crock Pot. We had been discussing purchasing a slow cooker for quite some time, maybe even since we moved in together over three years ago. I am in love! If you are following me on Instagram you may have seen the picture of ribs cooking the other day. They were so delicious and so easy. The Crock Pot is back out this morning. This time, we’re doing a roast. I’m excited!

If you’re following me on Twitter, Flickr or Tumblr you may have already seen this picture of Murray. Last weekend I found an old teddy bear and decided to give it to Murray – she’s quite happy. For those of you who followed my old blog over the summer, you may remember my ‘Meet Murray’ post. I am a huge dog lover (I always have been), and I have a tendency to over photograph Murray. Look at this, is there really such a thing as ‘too many’ Murray pictures?

The Christmas Catalog (Sears ‘Wish Book’) arrived the other day. Right now December seems so far away but I know it will quickly sneak up on us. With that being said, does anyone have any suggestions or requests for Halloween or Christmas themed blog posts? As excited as I am for Halloween and Christmas posts, I am always adding to my list of blog post ideas so if your suggestion or request isn’t holiday related, I’d still love to hear from you! On the topic of the holidays – has anyone started Christmas shopping yet?

Alright, I am sorry about this unorganized, all-over-the-place blog post. I promise, I am working on a number of different blog posts. As I said previously, I think I am long overdue for a DIY post. Be sure to check back next week!

Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend!

September 3rd, 2013

I cannot believe it is already Tuesday. It seems like the long weekend just started. The weekend may have flown by, but it was absolutely wonderful. I hope you all enjoyed your weekend as much as I enjoyed mine!

On Saturday August 31st, just before a small, low-key, pub-themed, belated birthday dinner, I ‘officially’ asked my lifelong best friend Jennifer to be my maid of honor with a goofy handmade card. On top of ‘securing’ my maid of honor, this weekend was the first chance I had to go through the wedding planning binder my mother tried to hand me just seconds after Tom’s early morning airport proposal. I was also given the ‘Wedding Day’ candle by Yankee Candle to burn the morning of my wedding while I get ready, then I have to pass it to someone else in our family for their wedding. I opted to leave this candle in the care of my mother – Tom likes burning candles and he has recently mentioned that we’re running low on candles. I didn’t want to chance it! Have any of you smelled this candle before? It smells absolutely amazing!

Tomorrow will be my ‘last first day’ of my undergraduate degree. With that being said, there is plenty to do on this wet and windy day.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions for future blog posts. Personally, I think I am long overdue for a DIY post. Fortunately, I do have a constantly growing list of ideas for future blog posts. This list also contains ideas for other writing projects. I have loved writing all my life and as I enter the final semester of my undergrad, I cannot help but wonder why I didn’t go into journalism!

Thanks for reading. Be sure to check back soon!

Farewell Summer, Updates and Flashback Friday

Although the season does not officially end until sometime in September, it will soon be time to say farewell to summer and welcome fall – for some of us, myself included, that will be early next week. While I always hate to see summer come to an end, I am looking forward to beginning my last semester of my undergraduate degree. It is also a little nerve wrecking. Sure, it can be stressful at times, but university has also been quite comforting and I expect I will miss it.  However, summer is not over yet and I plan to thoroughly enjoy the ‘last’ weekend. Tom, Murray and I will be going to visit my family for a night or two. I am very excited. Keep in mind, two weeks ago, I thought I would be going up for a week-long visit. Be sure to check back next week for related pictures and a blog post!

I have added a direct link to my old blog (you’ll find it up in the top right hand corner). I hope you continue to enjoy those blog posts. Please excuse the delay in publishing new content to this new blog. I expect that as I transition into a new routine over the next week or so, blog activity will increase. Keep in mind – just because I have no published anything does not mean I am not working on things ‘behind the scenes.’ As always, if you have any suggestions or requests for future blog posts, I would love to hear from you!

Two weeks have passed since Tom and I got engaged and I still cannot believe it. I have posted a couple of pictures from the trip to both Instagram and Flickr. Be sure to check them out!

Have you seen today’s ‘Flashback Friday’? Be sure to follow on Twitter or Instagram! You can also find me on Tumblr. Today, Twitter and Instagram have different Flashback Friday pictures – click here to see today’s Flashback Friday on Instagram and here to see today’s Flashback Friday on Twitter.

I’m Engaged!

P1010191

My engagement ring. When Tom first told me he wanted to do a custom-made engagement ring I was a little nervous, but I think he did a phenomenal job!

On Friday, August 16th 2013 I woke up at 4:00am and by 4:30am Tom and I were on the road and headed to the airport. I was under the impression that Tom was going away for two weeks for work and that after dropping him off at the airport I would go spend a week visiting family and relaxing by the pool. Tom had even arranged for a friend to watch Murray for the week so that I could really enjoy myself and relax. That should have been my first clue right there! We arrived at the airport at approximately 5:00am and rather than simply dropping Tom off at the door and continuing on my way I accompanied him inside with the intention of joining him for a light breakfast before his flight.  However, before we could go for breakfast Tom had to check-in and he led the way towards the West Jet kiosk. Then, without any warning I was greeted by my mother, step-father, younger brother, grandmother and one of my aunts – I’m not entirely sure where they came from. My mother, aunt and grandmother had tears in their eyes and I immediately thought I knew what was happening – obviously, Tom was going to propose. I think I even commented to my mother that her tears were making it obvious. I quickly looked back at Tom expecting him to be on one knee, but he did not seem to be reacting and immediately I convinced myself that he was not proposing. That left one very important question: if Tom was not proposing, why was my family at the airport at 5:00am? I hugged my family and continued to try to make sense of the situation without success. I’m not sure if one of my family members directed my attention back to Tom or if it was the sound of his voice but he began to tell me that he was not going away for work but that he wanted to surprise me and asked if I would come with him. Having failed to absorbed the fact that the trip I thought he was going on did not exist I immediately assumed that I was going to British Colombia with him and that he was still going away for work. He was quick to remind me that the trip I thought he was going on did not exist! As I continued to digest the situation he handed me my passport, which I immediately opened to confirm it was mine – it was! After I held onto my passport for a few seconds Tom continued to tell me that we had to go and get my luggage from the car and then we had to get on our plane. Perhaps by this point it should have been obvious that he was proposing and perhaps at a later hour in the day I would have caught on but I was having a hard enough time absorbing the fact that I was going on a surprise vacation. Besides, Tom had done a very good job convincing me that I had a few more months to wait before he proposed. Realizing that my travel plans were not happening I remember being momentarily crushed and trying to introduce him to aunt who I thought I would be spending the day with. And then it happened – after four years, one month and six days Tom got down on one knee with a ring in his hand and proposed. I was speechless. Absolutely speechless. In fact, all I could do was nod.

A 5am proposal meant I was rocking my Lulu Lemons and a sweater with minimal make up and messy hair… and I wouldn’t change a thing!

As much as I wanted to find a chair, sit down and absorb everything that had happened, time suddenly became a factor and Tom and I had to rush back to the car to fetch my luggage (the entire time I kept laughing, crying and hugging him) and then we had to check-in. Of course, I was quite curious to know where we were going and Tom was vague in his “we’re flying to Miami” response. When I assumed that we were spending a weekend in Miami Tom simply replied, “sure.” Finally, I thought I was “in the loop” but when my mother asked Tom if I knew where I was going, he told her I did not. Fortunately for me, while checking our luggage we were specifically asked if we were going on a cruise and as I started to shake my head ‘no’, Tom confirmed that we were. Once again, I was in complete shock.

Before I knew it I was hugging my family goodbye and going through security. We had approximately ten minutes to clear security and get to our gate before we began boarding. I quickly sent a couple of ‘I’m Engaged’ text messages before shutting off my phone. Of course, once we were on the plane I was full of questions. I wanted to know everything and fortunately, Tom was happy to provide answers.

We spent Friday night in Miami at the Hyatt Regency, the same hotel we stayed at in December prior to our two week Caribbean cruise. Although time was limited, it was wonderful to be back in Miami.

On Saturday morning we embarked on the Carnival Breeze for an 8-day Eastern Caribbean cruise.  Ports of call for the cruise included Grand Turk, San Juan, St. Maarten and St. Thomas. While I enjoyed each port, I think my favorite was Grand Turk – Tom and I ended up finding a quiet area on a beach not far from the cruise ship and it was nice to just walk along the beach and swim in the beautiful water.

Fortunately, Tom had enlisted the help of my mother to ensure I was properly packed for the cruise. There were a few additional items I think I would have packed had I known about the cruise, but I got by just fine without them. During the duration of the trip I remember turning to Tom and telling him I really appreciated the ‘alone time’ the trip provided us. Despite being surrounded by other people the trip provided some degree of seclusion – often times it felt like we were the only two people in the world.

I am incredibly thankful. Both the proposal and the trip were absolutely incredible and I still cannot stop smiling. Tom truly exceeded all of my expectations for a proposal.

We landed at approximately 12:05am yesterday (Monday) morning and it has been easy to keep busy ever since. My final semester of my undergrad begins next week and this weekend Tom and I will be spending some time visiting my family. On top of that, I have been doing a lot of writing over the summer and I hope to finish a couple of those projects, as well as start others, and I am eager to get back into blogging. I have opted to start a new blog (this blog), however, old blog posts can be found here. Wedding planning has already begun and I am happy to share my experiences here on my blog. As always, suggestions and requests for future blog posts are welcome!
